Robert CoverdillAssociate Director

Robert Coverdill is the associate director of the I-STEM Educational Initiative, which seeks to increase the number and quality of science, technology, engineering, and math teachers who graduate from the Urbana campus, along with improving student recruitment and retention rates in science and technology-affiliated programs. Bob works with STEM outreach programs, such as FIRST Robotics and Illinois Science Olympiad, and helps develop summer science camps for elementary, middle, and high school students. He is also involved in summer REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) and high school research internship programs.

Bob worked for 24 years as Director of Engineering and Technical Services in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. From 2009–10, he also served as Interim Director of Facilities for the College. Prior to his time at Illinois, Bob worked in the automotive industry and served in the US Air Force. He has extensive experience as a volunteer in Science Olympiad, Habitat for Humanity, local schools, and through his church rebuilding Hurricane Katrina-damaged homes.

Bob holds an Associate Degree from Prairie State College in Chicago Heights, IL, and Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois. He has authored or co-authored numerous journal articles in the area of combustion and fuel injection research. He is a member of ASME, SAE, ASEE, and NSTA.
